I’m new to therapy

Welcome! We feel it’s important to recognize the meaningfulness of this first step. While we hope you find the CAMI approach to be a good fit, we’re committed to supporting you in finding what you need as you begin your therapy journey.

We specialize in advanced, body-based approaches to resolving deep traumatic wounds often left unresolved by other trauma treatments. We support people who have experienced different types of traumatic events from single-incident events to deep, pre-relational and early childhood relational trauma, to traumas brought on by discrimination and systemic oppression.

We treat traumatic wounds by first building the body-based resources required to effectively process traumatic events. These resources are built using a neurosequential model to ensure those who struggle to have an embodied experience can do so slowly and safely. We then will work to identify and process traumatic shock, which must be completed prior to processing traumatic events for trauma processing to be successful. Lastly, we will skillfully support you to process traumatic experiences buried deep within mid-brain. This process is experientially different from other body-based therapy models or trauma treatments and will be felt as such. Only when traumatic events have been processed will clients get the most out of supportive therapy to begin to integrate the values, relationships, and experiences important to them.

Non-Diagnostic

At CAMI, working non-diagnostically means combining the most up-to-date understanding of the brain and body with common-sense approaches to mental healthcare. We are not here to medicalize or judge you. Rather, we will partner to identify how stress, trauma, and isolation can impact one’s brain and body and how these impact your health, life, and relationships. Instead of treating a diagnosis, therapy will be comprehensive, treating you as a whole person and addressing challenges traditional therapy misses.

Regardless of past diagnoses or if you are brand new to therapy, we believe you will see and feel the benefits of the non-diagnostic approach as soon as you begin therapy at CAMI.

Separated from Insurance

Our medical insurance system has played an equal role in producing an ineffective mental healthcare system. Insurance companies often limit access to care by predetermining the amount and types of treatment needed for individuals. We believe this to be a rather large disservice to those seeking to improve their mental health and well-being. As such, we have also separated from accepting insurance-based payments. We are a private-pay therapy practice only.

Many insurers will reimburse their members for therapy services based on out-of-network rates. It is the responsibility of clients to work with their insurers to get specific information for reimbursement. CAMI can then create superbills for you to submit to your insurance. Please note that CAMI does not submit documentation or collect reimbursements from insurance directly.

Justice-based, community-supportive therapists are important to me.

At the heart of CAMI is our commitment to justice and community.

At CAMI, we have found it important to integrate a liberation approach to address systemic oppression and how oppression distorts our sense of humanity in life. When engaging in supportive therapy at CAMI, we strive to uplift our individual and collective humanity using connection, embodiment, and intimacy as primary tools.

I’m in need of a sliding-scale payment option.

We believe that high-quality mental healthcare should be available to everybody regardless of one’s financial conditions. That’s why our therapists offer sliding-scale payment options. The rate paid will be determined based on current and expected resources. Our desired outcome is that both client and therapist feel valued and respected during the therapy process. I’m concerned my therapy record could be used against me.

At CAMI, we’re aware that many individuals avoid therapy because they are worried about documentation in their health record being used against them. Our therapists believe we have an ethical responsibility to effectively and legally practice and have received training to protect client’s privacy from punitive individuals or institutions. We will collaborate with you so you have a say in how your care is documented to best protect you.

I prefer working with a Covid-conscious therapist.

Our community-based approach to mental health care obliges us to be a COVID-conscious practice. We feel those vulnerable to COVID infections have been left behind and unfairly separated from community. We strive to bring common-sense protections to our practice to support those with COVID-vulnerabilities. We’ve equipped our office with both HEPA and CR filtration. Our therapists are likely to mask using N95s and encourage others to do so, especially during group activities. We will require telehealth sessions for those who have been exposed to COVID, who have tested positive, who have any symptoms, or who are near those who have any current symptoms. With these precautions, we can all support each other in connecting with care and community.
